We've come across a very rare opportunity, indeed.

DKYingst is looking for an Original Short Story (Or Stories)  to work on as a Summer Project. She will be graduating from College next year as an Animation and Painting major, and is looking to bolster up her portfolio, free of charge.

The story she is looking for will be no more than 8-15 pages, so no series, no continuations, they need to be very short stories. Take care and consideration at what you offer, and try to visualize each panel, and how many, realistically, can fit on a page and still look nice/be readable.

Consider how much text it actually took to create that page. Likely not very much, so keep in mind that a single page in text can be several pages in a comic.

The genre she prefers is darker realistic stories, but she is full up on ideas about Zombies of her own, so she's not too interested in that sort of work, but perhaps something similar would be manageable.

What she has no desire to draw:
  • Mecha
  • Very pointless Smut or sex
  • Yaoi/Yuri
  • furries or animal main characters
  • Manga / Japanese stuff (She has preference to keep it toward a primarily English audience)
  • Fanfiction (for this project)

To Submit
Please see DKYingst's Journal Post on the topic. She is requesting you post a comment there with the...
  • Title
  • Genre
  • Setting
  • Mandatory Information

I recommend submitting a very short blurb, no more than 500 characters. (letters and grammar, not characters as in the stories antagonist or protagonist... people get confused on that). She will contact you if she wants to get more about the story. Giving character descriptions isn't necessary at this point, as she is looking to see stories she enjoys the sound of and work for her first, and additional details later.

Example:

  • Title: Preternatural
  • Genre: Horror/Supernatural
  • Setting: 2014, La Isla de la Munecas, The Island of the Dolls in Mexico.
  • Blurb: A group of paranormal investigators travel to The Island of the Dolls in Mexico to investigate the famed hauntings that have been reported there, such as moving dolls and children laughing. Their investigation takes a turn as they find that spirits may be the least of their worries on the island, and the boat isn't coming back.
  • Mandatory Information: The island and legend this story is based on is all true, the island exists and I have spent over a year doing research on it. I am also a paranormal investigator, having investigated 7 locations this year, and detailing my reports on my blog (urltoblog), so I am very familiar with the equipment and specifics involved to make this story more realistic.

It's something short, sweet, and tells what the story is about. You may want to include information on your credentials... such as, if you're doing a survivalist story, what training do you have as a survivalist? Do you have any awards for your writing? Anything published? Any other comics you've done with success? Keep it short and sweet, but give additional credentials if you have them.

Please note, if your story/idea is denied, do not feel bad! It says nothing about you as a writer, just consider how many times Harry Potter was denied... and that Twilight was accepted. It just means that for this particular individual, your story, or even just the way it was presented in the blurb, did not catch their attention at this time. DKYingst has the right to be picky on this, so stories they may enjoy might be turned down for many reasons, including she may not feel she can do it justice in such a short amount of pages.

Getting a short story turned into a comic is a fantastic option for anyone who has a dream of having a comic, but has a tight budget on what they can spend. To better guarantee yourself a comic, check out the Commission Board to find artists doing comics. Find one you like, contact them about the project and see what can be worked out. Also note that DKYingst does commissions, so even if you just like her art style, but have no story to submit, it's very possible to get artwork from her, as she is very talented.

I had no idea I could submit pictures in a journal that wasn't a super group until just now... this will be used often in the future, oh yes...
It's always insistent that if you are seeking work, you must pay for it to be done. You cannot go up to an artist or writer and insist they work for free, any more than you can walk up to a mechanic and insist on free repairs because the mechanic enjoys working on cars or it was "easy" work, or even "great publicity" for them. Artists need to make a living just as anyone else, and are often paid well below minimum wage but expected to work just as hard. This is an industry that is struggling to survive due to the incorrect assumption that artwork is "fun" and so it should be free, and so it's always best to offer payment when seeking work, regardless if you expect to make money off the project or not.

If someone is offering free work, however, we will promote them should they allow us to, as it is up to them if they want to accept work for free it is up to them, and they are usually only doing very short jobs people otherwise would not get done, and being very selective about it. We do understand very well that writers deserve to be paid, as well.

DKYingst , Upon reading this proposition, I was immediately interested in offering my services in providing an 8-15 page written piece, narrating the scene you have depicted in this work featured in this journal.

However, before we further negotiate terms of this offer, I wish clarify that I would prefer (if you select my work) to create the story pro-bono for you.
